Portion Size: What we know and what we need to know
Benton, D. (2013). Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition 10.1080/10408398.2012.679980
Objective: To review the evidence for a role of portion size in energy intake and bodyweight.
Design: Narrative review
Main outcome measures: A variety of observational trials, laboratory studies and longer-term trials
Results: Studies suggest that portion sizes have increased over time and where participants are provided larger portions, they consume more. A variety of different factors influence consumers response to portion sizes such as the size and shape of the plates/ containers, the labelling of a food as “healthy” or "organic" which can increase the amount eaten, and perceived value for money.
Conclusions: More research is needed to explore this complex area to ascertain the importance of portion size relative to the range of other variables that influence food intake.
