Dietary glycaemic index and glycaemic load in relation to the risk of type 2 Diabetes: a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies

Dong J-Y, Zhang L, Zhang Y-H , Qin L-Q (2011) BJN 106:1641654

Objective: To assess the association between dietary Glycaemic Index and Glycaemic Load and risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes

Design: Meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies, follow up 4-14 years

Setting: Various

Participants: Mostly European subjects

Main outcome measures: GI and GL of diet at baseline. RR of incident diabetes during follow up.

Results: Overall summary RR was 1.16 (C.I. 1.06-1.26; P= 0.018) for GI and 1.20 (C.I. 1.11-1.30 P=0.104) for GL. Little evidence of publication bias (Begg's and Egger's tests)

Conclusions: Study provides further evidence in support of significant positive associations between dietary GI and GL and risk of Type 2 Diabetes
